About these photographs

This is a collection of largely unrelated photographs that I took from time to time and at one place or another over the last few years. Many are from Cape Cod, where I was fortunate to live for two years, and from the seacoast of upper New England. All were made from conventional black and white film and printing paper processed in a "wet" darkroom. About half the negatives are medium format (2.25 inches square) and the rest are large format, 4x5 or 5x7.

Below each image, I have indicated its location and the general process used to make the print. I use three basic processes, which may be combined:
Conventional silver printing, usually without toning.
Bleaching, in which the processed silver print is bathed in one or more bleaching agents to remove portions of the exposed silver and, if conditions are right, to change the tonal range and add unlikely colors. These colors are "artificial" in that they are a function of the bleach chemistry and bear no relation to the actual color of the subject.
Lith printing, in which a lithographic developer is substituted for the usual paper developer to produce a different tone, color and "feel."

All of these photographs are printed on heavy-weight fiber paper processed to archival standards and mounted on 4-ply archival board. Mounted sizes range from 11x14 to 20x24 inches. Subject to availability, they are available for purchase. For information, please contact Jane Porter at:
